Michael J. Gorman in his book Cruciformity
Paul’s Narrative Spirituality of the Cross states that Bonhoeffer was writing for and about his beloved Lutheran (Evangelical) church in Germany during the rise of the Nazi regime. And suggests in regard to the following Bonhoeffer quote we should insert our denomination or era.
“We Lutherans have gathered like eagles round the carcase of cheap grace, and there we have drunk of the poison which has killed the life of following Christ. . . . Cheap grace has turned out to be utterly merciless to our Evangelical Church. This cheap grace has been no less disastrous to our spiritual lives. Instead of opening up the way to Christ it has closed it. . . . The word cheap grace has been the ruin of more Christians than any commandment of works.” The Cost of Discipleship, pp. 57-59
